Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Plan B

It’s about time I sat down at the chart table and tapped out a new post, right? I teased in my last post that we may have to head back to the states … and we did.
Our Plan B report covers a lot of time and distance, so we’re going to let pics and short video snippets tell the story. Strap into the helm and let’s go!

After a beautiful sail from Great Inagua, we made it to Dominican Republic under sail the whole way ! It was a long but good sail.
A view from my office today, which is the equivalent of the 7th floor of an office building in the city...and I have a fear of heights. Improvise, adapt and overcome is a phrase I hear often from my hubby, so after having our main sail plummet down on the sail to Great Inagua because of a sheave failure, he figured out a way to get our halyard back up using our boom topping lift. It just required me to go up and tie a knot on to a pin into the mast.
On our passage to Great Inagua, we caught two Cerro - which are absolutely delish! The second one was really big but unfortunately a shark took half of him before we could get him in 😭 but tonight's dinner is what was left. If you don't already know (I had no clue) a Cerro is a member of the mackerel family, and gets a rating of five forks ! 🍴
Sunsets have always been something I look forward to and sailing is like having a new backyard to view it from. Since we've been waiting out strong winds (which means getting drenched if we go ashore) we have taken the time to get boat chores done and cleaning. Now we are eager to get moving!
Today we have a car!! Such a treat from our normal long walks.
To keep variety on our table at sea, my sister helped me come up with tonight's recipe. Since I didn't have a few of the ingredients on hand, I had to get a little creative...Blackened Tuna over greens with a Soy-Ginger-Lime dressing. It was actually pretty darn good 🙌
Conception Island had one of the deepest anchorages we've seen in a while, but mostly because I'm a chicken...getting close to shore just makes my nerves rattle, even when I know the winds aren't predicted to shift, the 'what if' thought enters my mind. We weren't the furthest boat from shore but many were closer. The complication of so many coral heads around didn't help, and the truth is when the winds aren't expected to be high, it doesn't matter to me. TD is at the front of the boat at the windlass, and when we fell back on the anchor, TD said "why are we way out here?" Because I'm the anchoring captain, that's why! 🥴
Today we left Conception Island and headed back to Long Island, taking the long way down to Crooked/Acklins Island because the bank side is SO MUCH calmer. So it will take us a while to get there, especially since we will have to wait for wind and wave height to align before we can complete the trip. But that's why we like sailing, it's wherever the wind takes us... And if we were on a schedule we would have missed some of the best times.
Snorkeling in Rum Cay - named after a cargo ship of rum wrecked here years ago. TD searched, but hasn't found any ancient rum so far.
